Nutrient Dense Project
Did you know that the fruit and veg you buy in the supermarket today has less than half the nutrients in it than it did 100 years ago? Not many people do. But it does. Which means a strawberry you eat today is less than half as healthy, and half as tasty as it used to be.
Something you might not know...
Why has this happened?
Conventional agriculture has been led down a questionable path in the last few decades, where the mainstream focus has been shifted to greater yields, at the expense of quality.
Good question. We’re on a mission to get those nutrients back up to the levels of old, and beyond, so that you can enjoy fresh fruit how it used to taste, and how it should taste.
Most of the changes we are making involve creating healthiest, most natural environment for our plants to grow - proactively working with nature, rather than against it. These include:
nurturing and enhancing soil biology (the soil is a living organism, which works very hard for us!)
balancing our soil chemistry (when it comes to minerals in the soil, it's all about balance, and we target key ratios to make sure the plant has access to what it needs, when it needs it)
enhancing our water (we enhance our water to make it more like that in a flowing mountain stream - the plants prefer it in this form - as do our bodies!)
carbon sequestration (big word, but basically means taking carbon out of the atmosphere and locking it in the soil - reverse global warming! Plants love carbon in the soil for a variety of reasons, so we add it wherever possible).
What are Arbuckles doing about it?
When can I taste a Nutrient Dense berry?
The berries at our farm shop are already amongst the most nutrient dense and tasty around (or so our customers say!) However, as we continue the project over the next few years, we aim for the day that you visit our shop and say ‘wow, that’s how food used to taste’.
